Program Mission and Goals:

  • To work towards the development of a workable literacy program.
  • To assist participants in addressing their literacy needs.
  • To develop a partnership with other resource centres to promote literacy.
  • To promote literacy as a means of improving the quality of life.

Program Description: Northlands College and its Board of Directors serve as the governing body for this program which encompasses basic, intermediate, family literacy, life skills and job preparation.

The program is delivered through small classes and one-on-one tutoring and offers free tutoring, free materials and ongoing support to its learners. Held on a weekly basis in sessions that last 2 hours, the program currently employs one staff member and 10 volunteers. 90% of the volunteers are Aboriginal. Approximately 60% of the learners are Métis and another 30% are First Nations People.
