Program Mission and Goals: Established to promote literacy and train volunteer tutors in the north. The goals of this program are to help prepare residents of the north to fit in with the rest of the province and to create a better future for themselves.

Program Description: Governed by the Northlands College board, this program has been in operation since 1988 and serves approximately 75-100 learners (capacity 200). Programs are delivered through both one-on-one tutoring and small classes.

Student capabilities are assessed using the Canadian Adult Achievement Test (CAAT) and the Canadian Adult Reading Assessment (CARA).

The program offers the following components:

 
  • Basic Literacy (level 1)
  • Aboriginal languages
  • General Education Diploma (GED)
  • Intermediate literacy
  • Family Literacy
  • Computer literacy
