There are approximately 12 volunteers working in this program and 95% of these individuals are Aboriginal. The sessions range in length from 1-3 hours offered on a bi-weekly basis. Group sessions when offered are daily. The teaching and learning methods are based on the individual needs of the learner. While the program uses materials from the Saskatchewan curriculum, it also tries to incorporate Aboriginal themes and culturally relevant materials. Elders are used as resources in programs. Learners are motivated by occupational and personal development goals to enroll in this program. Supports provided to the learners include free materials and counseling. Source of Funds: 70% of the funding for this program comes from the Government of Saskatchewan - Saskatchewan Learning Department. 30% comes from the Federal Government - National Literacy Secretariat (NLS). Unique Features of this Program: Designed to meet the needs of northern residents of Aboriginal and non Aboriginal descent. Program Challenges: Training for staff and tutors, drop out rates and distance people must travel in the north to access the program. |
