The Literacy Development Council of Newfoundland and Labrador is in the process of developing a Learners Network. This network will have many benefits to you as a learner. It will give you the opportunity to share information with other learners throughout the province. It will give you the opportunity to discuss the kinds of things that are important to you. It will provide learners with a common voice. It will provide you with information about the kinds of needs of learners throughout the province. Learning Centres Some learners have the opportunity to improve their reading and writing skills by attending a community learning centre. There are learning centres in some towns throughout the province. They are run by a variety of organizations. A limited number of learners participate in basic literacy programs at these centres. They are generally run free of charge. Most centres are open Monday to Friday during regular school hours. Unfortunately, there is a great demand at these centres and seats are not always available for everyone needing services. The Literacy Development Council would like to know more about your thoughts concerning this type of service. was one in your area. Are literacy tutors available in your community? __________________ Laubach Literacy of Canada provides basic literacy services to learners: I throughout the province. Volunteer tutors are matched with learners. They meet once or twice a week at a time and location suitable to both the learner and the tutor. The service is free of charge. There are twenty-four councils in communities around the province.
