Part 1: Getting Started

Creating Your Plan:  Assessment

To improve in the future, it is critical to understand what worked, what didn't, and why. The reason for assessing results is to capture new learning, not to be defensive or to rationalize why something did not go well. The information gained from assessing your results is fed into the Situational Analysis of future plans so that not just you, but your entire organization, learns from the experience.

Examples

Objective #1: In random surveying of the general public in November, 2008, 25% will give an acceptable definition of literacy; 75% will agree that raising it is an important societal issue.

Achieved: No. (18% gave an acceptable definition of literacy, 66% agreed that it is an important societal issue.)

Why/Why Not: While specific target audiences received and understood our message, the general public did not receive adequate exposure to make a significant difference in their understanding of literacy and its importance.

Lessons Learned:  To shift knowledge and attitudes among the general public, broad-based Tactics are necessary and individuals must be exposed to our message many times.
