Mobilizing People

Speaking in Public

Learners make excellent speakers in promoting the cause of literacy. But agency staff and volunteers are also excellent spokespeople for your organization. A standardized presentation that can be tailored to the group to which you are making the presentation is essential for making presentations easier and more effective.

The OLC’s PowerPoint presentation was developed to communicate about literacy issues during the 2003 “What did you learn today? . . . Literacy touches everything!” campaign (for example, at launch events or fundraisers). However, it can be used throughout the year and adapted for a variety of audiences in various contexts, including presentations to other community organizations.

The slides in the OLC’s PowerPoint presentation include information on:

  • What is literacy?
  • What do literacy skills do?
  • What do you know about literacy?
  • What can you do with literacy skills?
  • If you did not have literacy skills, how do you think it would affect you in your everyday life?
  • Why is it important to promote literacy in Ontario?
  • Why is literacy important in our community?
  • A Personal Journey
  • Literacy touches work!
  • Literacy touches families!
  • Literacy touches health!
  • Literacy touches crime!
  • The Campaign
  • Purpose of the Campaign
  • Events of the Campaign
