Bookmarks

• Purpose of the bookmark

The purpose of the bookmark is to raise people’s awareness of pressing literacy needs and proven and available solutions. It can also be used to gather contact information on people who would like to know more about your programs. Volunteers can call people a week or a month after the campaign and ask if they remember the campaign and whether they took action as a result of the campaign. A copy of the OLC designed bookmark is available in the tools section.

The bookmark designed by OLC has two parts:

  • The top part is a checklist of literacy skills that people use in everyday life. Because the person filling out the bookmark keeps this portion, the bookmark is a reminder of the campaign and serves to reinforce the literacy message.

  • The bottom part of the bookmark asks for the name and telephone number of the individual and asks the question “How did you use your literacy skills today?” This part of the bookmark is deposited by individuals in a box provided. On the reverse, people can indicate if they want more information about a program or to volunteer.

Some groups also used the bookmarks as tickets for door prizes at community events.
