How community partners can be involved
It is important to let community partners choose their own level
of involvement. Some community partners may choose to sit on a
steering committee for the campaign. Others may agree to collect
bookmarks in their locations or host a special event. The following
are suggestions for how community partners can be involved:
- Hosting an open house and presentation, including distributing
and posting information, and issuing a campaign challenge to
its own clients/employees/participants. Open houses can demonstrate
community programs such as sewing, woodworking, storytelling,
and karate. A representative from the local literacy organization
or an adult learner can speak about the literacy skills involved
in the activity.
- Hosting an open house to promote literacy in the community.
You would provide the partner with information, posters, and
material to distribute.
- Displaying posters, distributing material about literacy during
the campaign week, and collecting bookmarks.
- Offering a prize using information bookmarks as tickets.
- Participating in the campaign launch.
- Hosting a presentation about literacy and/or a presentation
by an adult learner. For example, presentations could be done
by a speaking team on:
- Understanding Literacy – what literacy skills
look like at different levels of ability
- Clear Language – educating the community on the
meaning of clear language, giving examples on how to implement
it and the impact.
If doing presentations in the workplace, please ensure that the
people who have literacy challenges are taken into consideration.
The message should be developed carefully.
