Launching Activities

Introduction

This section describes the activities and supports that are at the heart of the OLC’s public awareness campaigns and essential to its success. The Challenge, the Launch, the Community Events and various promotional supports all help to make the campaign inclusive and raise its profile. Activities and promotional tools are designed to be flexible so that each community can use them according to their priorities and to the extent of their resources.

The Challenge

Issuing a challenge can heighten interest in any awareness campaign. A challenge can be used as a media “hook.” It can be used by local government leaders to challenge the community to take action. It can be used by community organizations to generate interest in their own community events. The spirit of the challenge is meant to be fun and positive, not competitive.

Here are some ideas of what the challenge could look like:

  • The OLC or a prominent local figure could issue a challenge to the communities in the area to improve literacy awareness in their community
  • Businesses could issue inter-corporate challenges
  • The public could be issued a challenge through the media and other communications materials asking them if they or someone they care about needs help with literacy.

A challenge is a good way to generate awareness about literacy. Community partners participating in past campaigns liked the idea of a challenge to focus the public’s attention on the campaign message and to take some kind of action.
