Launching Activities
The launch Planning and hosting a launch event is one of the best ways
to generate excitement and interest in the campaign. The event
attracts the media and helps to raise the profile of the event.
See the checklist and tips for conducting a successful launch
event which appear later in this section.
- Location
To plan an event, find a location that will
accommodate public speakers, media, and an audience. Find
an area with
lots of space,
perhaps seating. In 2003, the launches were held in a literacy
organization’s new offices, a bookstore, and a library.
- Support material
Have all of your promotional material
available, e.g. bookmarks, buttons, fact sheet, FAQs about
literacy and media release.
You could also feature a display about the OLC. You may want
to use
the PowerPoint presentation that is available here.
- Speakers
Include a variety of speakers, such as the
mayor or other local politicians, members of the provincial
or federal governments,
a representative from the host literacy organization, community
partners, and especially, an adult learner. Have a high-profile
person with a genuine interest in literacy issue the challenge.
Make sure adult learners are actively involved: e.g. making
a
presentation, hosting a dignitary, or giving a media interview.
- Other participants
Community partners are usually keen to
participate because they are committed to literacy in the community.
The launch
is also good for exposure and building partnerships.
